Let's talk

The science of conversation is a much undermined one. In fact the art of talking as a whole has been largely denigrated. However, the wise will realize that talk, speech, banter or whatever you might call it is essential for the survival of the human species. Indeed it is that what makes and keeps humans human. One needs the buzz of conversation to connect. The silent connection is all very philosophical, but that usually happens after a lot of talking. Silence is golden, but speech is sometimes priceless.

One might question this. After all, all the wisemen supposedly speak less and listen more and whatnot. But what would they listen to if there is not talk? And to speak does immediately add up to not listening. The common people write off talkers as “chatterboxes” or “blabbermouths”. But that’s because they are not listening. In my opinion those wisemen were selfish- they didn’t want anyone else to hear their wisdom. And if they were the silent type, then why is italways “the wise man said…”? Talking is all about sharing. You talk to others share and so that they can share. Quid pro quo is the golden rule of conversation. Otherwise it is a monologue. Which is great for a stage- but it isn’t really talk. While conversation shares, it also releases. That’s why people to talk to themselves when they have something mulling in their minds.

All this talk about talking isn’t just small talk. Really- what would the world be like if we had no talking? If there were no on the spot gags and witticisms? If there was no Donkey to go with Shrek? There would be no late night conversations, no mokkai matches- so many things, things that make life less of existing and more of living, would just vanish. Those silent wisemen were too into themselves to actually talk about it.
We being wise beings must rise above our predecessors- Let’s talk.

The afternoon stretched out like spilled water. The sun had dipped into a cloud to touch up it's make up. Gunther and Ames lazed under the window, as their learned thoughts coalesced into the golden rays of enlightenment that spewed forth....
